Turner Syndrome and Thyroid Problems
A Summary of Turner Syndrome and Thyroid Problems
Approximately one third of individuals with Turner syndrome have a thyroid condition, usually hypothyroidism. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:
- Decreased energy
- Dry skin
- Cold-intolerance
- Poor growth.
In most cases, these problems are caused by an immune system attack on the thyroid gland (also known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis). Although it is not known why thyroid disorders occur with a high frequency with Turner syndrome, the condition is easily treated with thyroid hormone supplements.
